Clear aligners vs. braces: how do you choose?

Both straighten teeth, but clear aligners are removable, nearly invisible trays that move teeth gradually, while braces are brackets and wires fixed to your teeth. The best choice depends on your bite, how complex the movement is, your appearance preferences, and your daily habits.

How do clear aligners work?

Clear aligners are a series of clear, removable trays. Each tray moves your teeth a little, and you switch to the next one in the series as you go. You take them out to eat and to brush, and they need to be worn most of the day and night to do their job. Because they are clear and removable, many adults and older teens like that they fit into daily life without standing out.

How do braces work?

Braces use small brackets bonded to your teeth and connected by wires. They are not removable, and they are adjusted over time to guide your teeth into place. Braces can handle more complex movements, and while metal braces are visible, ceramic ones are less noticeable. Braces also do not rely on you remembering to wear them, since they stay on until your treatment is done.

What should you weigh when choosing?

There is no single best option for everyone. A few things usually guide the decision.

  • Appearance: aligners are hard to notice, while braces are more visible (ceramic braces less so)
  • Removable or fixed: aligners come out for eating and cleaning, braces stay on
  • Discipline: aligners only work if you wear them most of the day and night
  • Complexity: some bite problems are handled better by braces
