Dental implants vs. a bridge: which is better for a missing tooth?

Both can replace a missing tooth well, but they work differently: an implant is a post placed in the jawbone that stands on its own, while a bridge anchors a false tooth to the teeth beside the gap. The better choice depends on your jawbone, the teeth around the gap, and your goals, so a dentist should help you decide.

How does a dental implant work?

A dental implant replaces the root of a missing tooth. A dentist or specialist places a small post, usually made of titanium, into the jawbone. Over a healing period, the bone grows snugly around the post and holds it in place. A crown, which is the part that looks like a tooth, is then attached on top.

Because an implant stands on its own, it does not rely on the teeth next to it. It also helps keep the jawbone active in the area where the tooth was lost.

How does a dental bridge work?

A bridge fills the gap by connecting a false tooth to the natural teeth on each side. To hold it in place, the dentist reshapes those neighboring teeth and covers them with crowns that support the false tooth in the middle. The finished bridge is fixed, so you do not take it out.

What is the main difference between them?

The biggest difference is what supports the new tooth. An implant is supported by the jawbone, while a traditional bridge is supported by the teeth on either side of the gap.

  • Implant: stands alone, leaves the neighboring teeth untouched, and replaces the tooth root
  • Bridge: does not need surgery and can often be finished sooner, but the nearby teeth are reshaped to hold it
  • Both are fixed in place and are cared for with regular brushing, flossing, and checkups

Which option is better for you?

There is no single answer that is right for everyone. Your dentist will look at the health of your gums and jawbone, the condition of the teeth around the gap, your overall health, and what you want for the long term. Healthy gums matter for either choice, which is why gum care is often part of the plan.

For some people an implant is the best fit, and for others a bridge makes more sense. The goal is a comfortable, natural-looking result that you can keep clean.
