Porcelain veneers: what are they and what should you expect?

Porcelain veneers are thin, custom-made shells bonded to the front of your teeth to improve their color, shape, and evenness and to cover chips, gaps, or stains. Getting them usually takes more than one visit and is planned step by step with your dentist.

What are porcelain veneers?

Porcelain veneers are slim shells of tooth-colored material bonded to the front surface of a tooth. Because each one is custom-made, they are shaped and shaded to blend with your smile. They are a cosmetic treatment, which means they focus on how your teeth look. Veneers cover the front of a tooth, so they change how your smile looks without acting like a full crown.

What can veneers improve?

Veneers are often used to refresh the front teeth that show when you smile. They can address several concerns at once.

  • Teeth that stay discolored even after whitening
  • Chipped or worn edges
  • Small gaps between teeth
  • Teeth that look uneven in shape or size

What is the process generally like?

It usually starts with a consultation about your goals. For traditional veneers, the dentist often removes a small amount of enamel, takes an impression or scan, and has custom shells made. At a later visit, the veneers are bonded to your teeth and adjusted for a comfortable fit.

At Northside Dental, Dr. Brent Agran is certified in Lumineers, which is one brand of thin veneers. Your dentist can explain which veneer approach suits your teeth and goals.

How do you care for veneers?

Veneers are cared for much like natural teeth, with daily brushing and flossing and regular checkups. It also helps to avoid biting hard objects, and if you grind your teeth at night, your dentist may suggest a night guard to protect your smile. With good habits, veneers can stay looking their best for a long time.

Consider this a general introduction, not personal advice about your teeth. At your visit, a Northside Dental dentist can tell you whether veneers are a good match for your goals and plan the details with you. Reach the office at 773-561-2237 or through the online appointment request form.
